What to Expect During Your Countertop Installation Day

Installation day is exciting. After weeks of planning, material selection, and fabrication, your new countertops are finally going in. But if you’ve never been through it before, you might wonder what actually happens.

We’ve installed hundreds of kitchens and bathrooms. We know the questions customers have, the concerns that come up, and what makes for a smooth installation. Here’s exactly what to expect when our team arrives at your home.

Before We Arrive: Your Preparation Checklist

A little preparation makes installation day smoother for everyone.

Clear Your Countertops
Remove everything from your existing counters—small appliances, dish racks, decorative items, everything. If we’re replacing countertops, we need clear access.

Empty Cabinets (If Possible)
We don’t always need this, but it’s helpful. If cabinets are empty, there’s no risk of items getting jostled during installation. Plus, it gives you a chance to clean inside them.

Disconnect Plumbing
If you’re comfortable doing it yourself, disconnect the plumbing under your sink. If not, we can coordinate with your plumber, or our team can handle simple disconnections. We’ll discuss this beforehand.

Clear a Path
We’ll be carrying stone slabs through your home. Make sure we have a clear, safe path from the driveway or street to your kitchen. Move furniture, rugs, or anything else that might be in the way.

Protect What Matters
We’ll protect your floors and work areas, but if you have specific concerns—valuable artwork nearby, antique furniture, delicate items—move them to another room just to be safe.

Plan for Pets and Kids
Installation involves tools, movement, and strangers in your home. If possible, arrange for pets to be elsewhere for the day. Same with young children—it’s safer and less stressful for everyone.

Morning: Arrival and Setup (30-60 minutes)

We Arrive On Time
We’ll give you a specific arrival window, and we stick to it. If something unexpected happens, we call ahead. Respect for your time is part of respect for your home.

Meet the Team
We’ll introduce everyone on the installation crew. Usually, it’s 2-3 experienced installers. These are our own team members—not subcontractors—who we’ve trained and trust.

Walk-Through Together
Before we start, we walk through the project with you. We confirm what’s being installed, answer any last-minute questions, and make sure everyone’s on the same page.

Protect Your Home
We lay down floor protection—usually heavy-duty cardboard or drop cloths—along our work path. We protect walls near corners where we’ll be maneuvering stone. We’re careful because we know it’s your home, not a construction site.

Set Up Tools
We bring in our tools and equipment. This includes measuring devices, levels, caulking and sealing materials, and hand tools for final adjustments. Any cutting that’s needed was done in our shop—we don’t cut stone in your home.

Mid-Morning: Removal (If Applicable) (1-2 hours)

If you’re replacing existing countertops, removal comes next.

Disconnect and Cap
We disconnect plumbing, cooktops, and any appliances attached to the counters. Everything gets capped properly to prevent leaks or gas issues.

Careful Removal
Old countertops come out in sections. We’re careful around cabinets, walls, and backsplashes. Sometimes old countertops are attached with significant adhesive or brackets—we handle whatever we encounter.

Debris Management
We bag and remove debris as we go. We don’t leave piles of old countertop sitting in your home. Everything goes directly into our truck or a disposal container.

Inspect the Base
Once old counters are out, we inspect your cabinets. We check for level, look for any issues that need addressing, and make sure everything’s ready for new counters.

Cabinet Adjustments
If cabinets aren’t perfectly level—which is common, especially in older homes—we make adjustments. We use shims and careful measuring to ensure new counters will sit properly. This is crucial for avoiding stress points that could cause cracking later.

Late Morning to Early Afternoon: Installation (2-4 hours)

Now comes the main event.

Bringing Stone Inside
Stone slabs are heavy—a typical kitchen counter can weigh several hundred pounds. We use proper lifting techniques and careful maneuvering. This is why clear paths matter.

We move slowly and deliberately. Rushing with heavy stone in tight spaces is how accidents happen. We don’t rush.

Test Fit
Before applying any adhesive, we test-fit each piece. We check seams, verify measurements, ensure everything fits exactly as planned. If any adjustment is needed, now’s the time.

Seam Placement
If your layout requires seams, we’ve already planned their placement to minimize visibility. During installation, we align seams carefully, matching patterns and ensuring tight joints.

Securing Countertops
We apply adhesive to secure stone to cabinets. The specific adhesive depends on the material and situation, but it’s always appropriate for the application. We use the right amount—enough for security without excess that could interfere with fit.

Leveling and Adjustment
We continuously check level as we work. Stone counters should be level (or have intentional slope toward the sink for drainage). We make micro-adjustments to get everything perfect.

Seam Work
For seams, we use color-matched epoxy and careful techniques to make joints as invisible as possible. Good seams virtually disappear—you know they’re there if you look for them, but they don’t interrupt the visual flow.

Early to Mid-Afternoon: Finishing Details (1-2 hours)

Installation isn’t done until every detail is right.

Sink Installation
If you’re using an undermount sink, we install and secure it to the underside of your stone. The bond between stone and sink is crucial—it needs to be strong and waterproof.

For drop-in sinks, we make sure they fit properly in the cutout and seal around the rim.

Cooktop Installation
If you have a cooktop cutout, we test-fit the cooktop (if it’s available) and ensure proper clearances. We’ll either install it directly or prepare the opening for your electrician or gas fitter to complete the connection.

Backsplash (If Applicable)
If your project includes a stone backsplash, we install it now. We measure carefully, ensure it’s plumb, and seal where it meets counters and walls.

Sealing
For granite, quartzite, or other porous stones, we apply sealer to all exposed edges and surfaces. This is a crucial step that protects against staining. The sealer needs to penetrate and cure, which we time appropriately.

Quartz doesn’t need sealing—it’s already non-porous.

Caulking
We caulk where counters meet walls, backsplashes, or other surfaces. This isn’t just aesthetic—it prevents water from getting behind counters. We use clear or color-matched caulk and apply it neatly.

Final Inspection
We go over every inch of the installation. We check seams, verify everything’s level, ensure all edges are perfect, and look for any issues that need addressing.

Then we invite you to inspect with us. We point out seams, explain any natural characteristics in the stone, and answer questions.

Late Afternoon: Cleanup and Walkthrough (30-60 minutes)

We’re not done until your home is clean and you’re satisfied.

Tool Removal
All our equipment and tools get packed up and removed from your home.

Surface Cleaning
We clean your new countertops thoroughly. Any dust, adhesive residue, or fingerprints get removed. Your counters should look pristine.

Floor and Area Cleanup
We remove all floor protection, sweep or vacuum as needed, and make sure we’re not leaving any debris or mess behind.

Debris Disposal
Everything we removed—old countertops, packaging, any trash generated during installation—leaves with us. We don’t leave it for you to deal with.

Final Walkthrough
We walk through everything together one more time. We show you the finished installation, explain any care instructions specific to your material, and make sure you’re completely happy.

Plumbing Reconnection
If we disconnected plumbing, we reconnect it (or coordinate with your plumber to do so). We test for leaks and make sure everything functions properly.

Care Instructions
We provide written care instructions for your specific stone. We explain what cleaners to use, what to avoid, and when resealing might be needed (for porous stones).

Warranty Information
We go over warranty coverage for materials and our installation work. You get documentation to keep.

That Evening: Using Your New Counters

Here’s the good news: you can use your new countertops immediately.

Once installation is complete and everything has cured (which happens quickly with modern adhesives), your kitchen is functional. You can cook dinner on your new counters that same evening.

We recommend waiting 24 hours before heavy use—like placing extremely heavy items or subjecting counters to stress. But normal cooking, food prep, and use? Go ahead.

Common Questions About Installation Day

“How long will you be here?”
Most installations take 4-8 hours, depending on project size and complexity. A simple bathroom vanity might be 2-3 hours. A large kitchen with multiple cutouts and backsplash could be a full day.

“Will there be a lot of noise?”
Not much. Major cutting happens in our shop, not your home. You’ll hear hand tools, some light hammering for leveling shims, and conversation among our team—but nothing excessively loud.

“What if something doesn’t fit?”
It will fit. That’s what digital templating and CNC cutting ensure. In thousands of installations, we’ve never had a piece that didn’t fit because of fabrication error.

“Can I stay home during installation?”
Absolutely, and many customers do. You’re welcome to watch, ask questions, or go about your day in other parts of your home. Some customers prefer to leave and come back to finished counters—that’s fine too.

“What if you find a problem with my cabinets?”
We’ll tell you immediately and discuss options. Minor leveling issues we handle as part of installation. Major structural problems are rare, but if we encounter something, we’ll explain the situation and recommend solutions.

“Do I need to feed your crew?”
That’s kind of you, but not necessary or expected. We bring our own lunch and beverages. If you want to offer coffee or water, we appreciate it, but please don’t feel obligated.
